Ceramic Dental Crowns
Crowns, also known as “caps,” are extremely versatile and long-lasting dental restorations that may be recommended for a number of reasons. Modern dental materials allow us to create beautiful crowns that look just like natural teeth.
Dental crowns are custom made to fit over the entire visible portion of the tooth. We often describe it as a “helmet” for your tooth.
“If I get a crown, is it still my natural tooth?” -Yes! There is no extraction involved. The ceramic crown will be cemented over your natural tooth. Many people who have had extensive/large fillings over their lifetime will eventually need crowns on some of those teeth, especially molars which need structural support.
Some reasons we might recommend a crown:
- Strengthen a fractured or weak tooth
- Achieve desired shape or color for cosmetic change
- Anchor a dental bridge
If we recommend a crown for you, we will discuss the process and expectations in detail.
Crowns typically require two appointments to complete. During the first of these appointments, our team will prepare the tooth and place you in a temporary crown. At Ruby Family Dentistry, we send all of our crowns to a professional laboratory for fabrication. The final crown will be placed during the second appointment.
Please reference the videos that we have included for further explanation. Please note that they illustrate a tray of physical impression material; at Ruby Family Dentistry we typically utilize our Trios intraoral 3D scanner to capture digital images. This eliminates the need for the traditional “goopy” impressions you may be used to, and is tolerated much better by patients!
