Dental Anxiety Treatment
We pride ourselves in the care we offer our patients with anxiety. This is a no judgment zone, and we will do everything we can to make you comfortable. Do not be embarrassed. We have so many patients who have had extremely negative past dental experiences which have inhibited them from seeking dental care for years.
Many of our phobic patients who came initially with extreme fear, swearing they will never have dental work without sedation, are now some of our best, most easy-going patients! Yes, this is true. What we have found as a main factor contributing to dental phobia is that treatment was performed where the patient was A) uninformed as to what was happening, and/or B)in pain during the procedure. It is no wonder they are afraid.
We take every measure to ensure our patients are totally comfortable with what is going on. The critical factors to alleviating your anxiety will be 1) trust in your provider, which can be built and strengthened over time, and 2) your understanding of your treatment plan.
Dental anxiety and fear manifest in a variety of ways, from mild feelings of worry and stress to specific and debilitating fears about upcoming procedures. Regardless of the level of your anxiety, our team is here to help you. Some additional tips below:
- Speak with our team. Let us know that you are anxious or afraid. We can take special precautions to help you feel more comfortable and watch for any signs of discomfort.
- Use calming techniques, such as controlled breathing or finding distractions in the room.
- Listen to music. Music can distract you, giving you something else to focus on while blocking out anxiety-producing noises during your treatment. Feel free to bring headphones.
- Ask us about sedation options. We do offer mild oral sedation via prescription when needed. You will need an escort for these appointments.
- Take breaks. If you feel overwhelmed during your treatment, signal us with your hand and we will stop for a few minutes so you can have a breather.
We never want fear or anxiety to prevent you from receiving the care you need. Please contact our office today to learn more about how we can help you manage dental anxiety during your appointment.
